Spelling variations of this family name include: Sever, Sevior, Sevyer, Seeviour, Siveyer, Sivier, Siver, Sivyer, Saviour, Saver, Seyvior, Sceviour, Scievor and many more. First found in Essex where they were anciently seated as Lords of the Manor. Some of the first settlers of this family name or some of its variants were: the name represented in many forms and recorded from the mid 17th century in the great migration from Europe. Migrants settled in the eastern seaboard from Newfoundland, to Maine, to Virginia, the Carolinas, and to the islands. (From www.HouseOfNames.com Archives copyright © 2000 - 2009). This interesting surname with variant spellings Severs, Seaver, Seavers and Severe has two possible origins. Firstly it may derive from an unrecorded female given name "Saefaru", which is composed of the Old English pre-7th Century elements "sae" meaning sea and "faru" a passage. "Seuare" a late variant of the name is recorded in the Knights Templars of Somerset (1185). It may also have derived from a nickname "the severe", referring to someone who is harsh or stern. Early recordings of the surname include Walter Sefare, registered in the Pipe Rolls of Bedfordshire (1230), Ralph Seffare, noted in the Subsidy Rolls of suffolk (1327), and Henry Sever in the History or Norfolk (1441). On May 8th, 1598, William Sever married Katherine Ball at St. Mary Aldermary, London, and on 17 August 1600, Thomas Sever, son of John Sever was christened in the same place. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of William Seuare, which was dated 1185, Pipe Rolls of Cornwall, during the reign of King Henry 2nd, "The Builder of Churches", 1154 - 1189. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling. © Copyright: Name Origin Research www.surnamedb.com 1980 - 2014.

"I havo searched all the available books on genealogical matters to which 1 had access, but found nothing further. I enclose the Coat of Arms, Crest and Motto, which we have used at least for a century, but I believe they were then chosen by my grandfather, and that the original Coat of Arms, if any, were lost. I think Burke contains almost all the particulars of which I am informed...t of arms herewith presented is substantially the same as the one above alluded to, with the crest and motto, and is thus described in Burke's Heraldic Illustrations, accompanied, also, with an engraving: — Arms.— Argent a chevron gules between three doves pecking sheaves of wheat, proper. Crest.— A hand and arm, holding a sword erect, encircled by a laurel wreath, all proper. Motto.— Sume snperbiam quresitam meritls. [Assume the pride acquired by merit.]"ply to inquiries on this subject. The letter is dated, 16 Botanic Avenue, Belfast, Aug. 25, 1871.
